“Story Jam” a fun-day in Chicago

Seven talented story-tellers, each telling a story, followed by an original song ( performed by a 10 piece band) is what one might anticipate at Story Jam. This event  conceived in 2015 by producer Stephanie Rogers who combines her love of literature and music to create a “story-telling show”  is a  unique experience for both the audience and the performers.

The band is composed of local and touring musicians. The stories are riveting, funny and personal. Sometimes the stories are even shocking with an especially diverse lineup of story tellers, making Story Jam a singularly different experience not to be missed!

FYI- some of the stories may have mature themes so be careful of those under 17.Hosted by Stephanie Rogers ( a singer/songwriter/storyteller herself), Story Jam combines the best of the best and during the band breaks, guests will be invited to dance and participate in contests ( with prizes).

The Story Jam took  place at City Winery, located at 1200 Randolph Street on May 20th at noon. Bruch menu is offered and of course beverages of your choice.  This was my first experience with “Story Jam” and while I could not stay for the entire program, what I saw was quite impressive.

The first story was about Immigration ( how timely is that)- an Ecuadorian attempting to become a citizen and the perils that go with this. Very funny, despite the topic.

Second up, a young lady with a dream- to appear on Jeopardy and what could or could not go wrong with becoming the winner!

First of all, my first visit to City Winery, a very cool venue where they have a back room stage area for private parties and events such as this.  Almost every seat had a clear view of the stage area.. Our Hostess, Stephanie Rogers is a bubbly, highly energetic lady who loves to sing and writes her own lyrics to go along with the story-tellers that are performing- that alone is worth the price of admission. I did get to hear three of the story-tellers, each with a message and all filled with comical touches. The audience was truly into it. In particular when Shannon ( number 3) did his “pick-up” line, for the third time, it seemed at all 100 plus audience members chimed in with him. Everyone smiling and laughing.

Due to another theatrical production, I had to leave prior to the audience participation portion: one minute story-tellers vieing to win a prize, followed by several more story-tellers and some more great music.

They do this on a regular basis, so if you are searching for something different to do, there is nothing better than this to  do just that.
